Organization of Tinbergen Institute

Tinbergen Institute (TI) was founded by the economics departments of the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), the University of Amsterdam (UvA), and the VU University Amsterdam (VU) in 1987. The best researchers from these three departments are selected by Tinbergen Institute and are appointed as TI research fellows. TI's fellows organize and govern the graduate program, they teach the courses, they organize and participate in the institute's research seminars and conferences, and they are all available as potential MPhil and PhD thesis advisors.

Currently, some 100 research fellows and 150 graduate students participate in Tinbergen Institute. TI's PhD alumni (over 450) can be found working for universities and international companies all over the world.

Prof. Bauke Visser is the general Director of TI; Prof. A.R. Soetevent is Director of Graduate Studies for the Economics track; Prof. A.C.F. Vorst is Director of Graduate Studies for the Finance track. The institute's Board consists of five members appointed by the departments participating in the institute. The coordinators of the research programs together form the Research Council. The institute has a dedicated administrative staff in both Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

The Directors of Graduate Studies organize the MPhil program in cooperation with the MPhil's Core and Field coordinators. The institute's Educational Board provides advise to the Board of the Tinbergen Institute, the Faculty Boards and to the Faculty Councils on all matters concerning the educational program. TI's Admissions Board is in charge of MPhil student admissions and the allocation of MPhil scholarships. The Examination Board is responsible for and supervises the organization and coordination of the exams. The Job Placement Committee supports students entering the international job market. The Students' council is an independent student body that informs and advises graduate students and organizes various social and professional events.
