Abstract:
This thesis presents econometric analyses with subjective measures used as a proxy for welfare and well-being. These are derived from individual answers to questions about the own perception of well-being. A range of scientifically and politically relevant questions is addressed. First, subjective questions are used to disentangle the determinants of welfare and well-being, with the aim to better understand individual behavior and welfare. Second, implications for trade-offs between income and health are derived. Third, poverty and distribution issues are studied. The empirical analyses are based on a variety of panel econometric techniques, using panel data sets for Germany, the UK and Russia.
