TI’s scholarship program for MPhil students

Tinbergen Institute has three levels of scholarships (level academic year 2017-18 for first-year students):

  • A full scholarship of € 1020 per month, tuition fee waiver for university registration for the year for which the scholarship is awarded and costs for health insurance with a maximum of € 40 a month;
  • A partial scholarship of € 510 per month, tuition fee waiver for university registration for the year for which the scholarship is awarded and costs for health insurance with a maximum of € 40 a month;
  • A tuition fee waiver and costs for health insurance with a maximum of € 40 a month

Applicants who want to compete for a TI scholarship should indicate this on the application form.

Because the institute’s resources are limited, prospective students are advised to apply for external funding as well (see e.g. Grantfinder).

PhD funding

Students in the program’s PhD phase are typically employed by one of the TI faculties as PhD researchers. These are full-time positions that come with all of the benefits of employment, including a good salary. A gross salary starts at € 2,640 per month. In their final year, students will receive a monthly gross wage of € 2,840. Most positions include a small teaching assignment to help the students gain teaching experience, which is useful for those considering an academic career.
