Tinbergen Institute (TI) was founded in 1987 by the Schools of Economics of the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), the University of Amsterdam (UvA), and the VU University Amsterdam (VU). The best researchers from these three departments are selected by Tinbergen Institute and are appointed as TI research fellows. TI fellows organize and govern the graduate program, teach the courses and organize and participate in the institute’s research seminars and conferences. All TI fellows are, moreover, available as potential MPhil and PhD thesis advisors.

TI is one of the major economic research institutes in the Netherlands, with over 180 research fellows and more than 200 students. TI’s PhD alumni (over 700) can be found working for universities and international companies all over the world.

Tinbergen Institute has offices in both Amsterdam and Rotterdam. TI is named after Professor Jan Tinbergen, the Dutch Nobel laureate in Economics (1969).
