3. Extensive program of field courses
Tinbergen Institute offers a wide array of field courses, allowing students to specialize in virtually any field of economics, econometrics and finance. At the start of the second year, students choose a major field from:
- Econometrics
- Empirical Microeconomics
- Finance
- Macroeconomics, Monetary Economics, and International Economics
- Spatial and Environmental Economics
- Applied Microeconomics
- Behavioral Economics
In 2008/09, the Tinbergen Institute offers about 45 field courses.

Berber Kramer (The Netherlands)
Second-year MPhil student
During my first year at the Tinbergen Institute I had the ambition to go into development economics, but before committing myself I wanted to gain some experience in the field. TI helped me find an internship in Nigeria. I set up a household survey focusing on a health (insurance) program. This experience was amazing because I experienced the excitement involved in empirical microeconomic research: from survey design and data collection to the final analysis.
This year I am taking courses in econometrics, empirical microeconomics and behavioral economics— a diverse curriculum, but possible at TI. I hope to include components from these three fields in my MPhil thesis, which I am also about to start. I am looking forward to the ups and downs of the thesis process under the guidance of one of the numerous TI fellows willing to supervise MPhil students.
