Academic results and impact within the discipline: a research fellow should have a PhD.
Furthermore, the publications during a five year period are relevant, either the five
calendar years prior to the year of application or the five calendar years including the
year of application. Also, the number of SSCI citations and international reputation are
taken into account.
Publication points
Articles in journals and contribution to books are evaluated according to the Tinbergen
Institute list of journals and the
list of publishers.
The journal list distinguishes an AA, A and B category. Books and contributions to books may
not exceed 40% of the total points.
To count the publication points the following formula is applied:
Points = Category x (Number of pages + 5) / (Number of authors + 1)
Where: Category AA = 4, A = 2, B = 1. Books and contribution to books = 0,5.
Published articles are taken into account and articles for which the author has seen the
galley proofs.
A researcher meets the admission requirements with at least 40 publication points.
Citations according to the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI)
Publication points may be partly replaced by citations in the Social Science Citation Index.
A researcher meets the admission requirements with at least 20 publications points and 400
citations according to the SSCI.
International reputation
Internationally renowned researchers can be admitted to TI based on the Board's judgment
i.e. not only based on number of publication points but also on international reputation. The
general director will nominate candidates for admission based on judgment. A peer advice is
required.
Exceptions
For those who do not fully meet this criterion, the Board can take additional considerations into account.
In any case, a minimum of 20 publication points is required. Applicants are requested to send a letter
detailing the reasons why they think TI should appoint them as research fellow.
Additional considerations may include: Major publications in journals related to the expertise of
the researcher that are not on the TI journal list because these journals cover a field that is not
covered by TI (e.g. JASA, American Policy Science Review, Science, Nature, Biometrika etc.; a significant
period within the last five years that a researcher was not fully active (e.g. in case of a disease);
the researcher has already been very active in TI activities: teaching in the MPhil program, organizing
seminars etc.
The admission requirements for female researchers who have been pregnant during the 5-year period are reduced by 8 points (= 20%) for each pregnancy.
The minimum requirement for admission as research fellow is 20 publication points.
Junior fellows
Researchers whose age on January 1 of the year of application is under 35 can apply
for a junior fellowship. The requirement for junior fellows is 25 points.
Candidate fellows
Recently graduated postdocs or tenure-trackers, appointed at one of the departments participating in TI, can be
admitted to TI as candidate research fellows. This new fellow category aims to affiliate young researchers with
the research school. Candidate fellows have to be nominated by a research fellow together with the coordinator of the
TI research program. Admission is for three years; the candidate fellow is supposed to qualify for admission as (junior)
fellow within this period. Please find here the application form.
If you wish to qualify for admission as candidate research fellow, please complete this form and submit it with your curriculum vitae to a.dejong@tinbergen.nl.
Admittance as research fellow (with the exception of aspirant and associate fellows) is valid until the expiration date of the KNAW accreditation of TI (December 2011).
TI's Board decides on the admittance of research fellows. The requirements will be applied as
guidelines for admission. The Board of the Institute has the authority to deviate from these
guidelines whenever specific considerations make this necessary. In case the applicant disagrees
with the decision of the TI-Board, the TI-Board will establish a committee of appeal. The
decision of this committee will be final.
