Abstract
China has been the first country affected by the COVID-19 virus, and has reacted strongly in the first months of 2020. This paper presents new evidence on the changes in mental health in China between 2018 and 2020. Using two waves of the China Family Panel Study (CFSH) we are able to follow the same individuals over time. Our preliminary results seem to point to an average mental health deterioration between 2018 and 2020, which is (much) worse for individuals who are subject to strict lockdowns. The effects we find are larger for younger cohorts compared to older ones, for men, for individuals with lower levels of education, and for individuals that also report to have more open personalities.
