How can the financial sector contribute, or even speed up, businesses’ transition to long-term value creation within a sustainable economy?
Starting with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS) as the global strategy for sustainable development, we review the governance mechanisms to deal with these challenges, highlighting the move from the narrow shareholder model (focusing on financial value) to the broader stakeholder model (focusing on long-term value creation). Sustainable finance considers financial, social, and environmental returns in combination (integrated value) and provides tools for sustainable investing and lending. Sustainable finance requires also a transition of the financial sector itself, finance education and finance research. This does not only concern the finance discipline, but also the fields of economics, business and law.
